How Does Precision All-Wheel Steering Work?

Acura All Wheel Drive

Precision All-Wheel Steering is a system that works by independently adjusting the toe angles of your vehicle's rear wheels to provide fully independent rear-wheel steering. In most vehicles, only the front wheels are controlled by the steering wheel. The rear wheels are used to provide extra stability and control, but the steering is controlled entirely in the front. With Precision All-Wheel Steering, the steering wheel still controls the angle of the front wheels, but the rear wheels will automatically pivot up to 1.8 degrees in the same direction to make changing lanes a smoother and easier process. The rear wheels can also turn slightly in the opposite direction of the front wheels to help your vehicle rotate into a turn.

The Precision All-Wheel Steering system also works with your vehicle's brakes. The Vehicle Stability Assist and the Agile Handling Assist systems apply the brakes to the front and rear inside wheels during a turn for some added stability, and the rear wheels angle inward when the brakes are applied at high speeds to bring your vehicle to a smoother and faster stop. When the brakes are applied at lower speeds, the same system can add some stability and control for maneuvering in small spaces such as when you have to pull in or out of a parking space or a garage.

Precision All-Wheel Steering vs. All-Wheel Drive

Precision All-Wheel Steering is often compared to all-wheel drive since both systems involve applying power to all four wheels. The big difference between these two systems is that while all-wheel drive distributes power to all four wheels, it does so to improve your vehicle's traction. Precision All-Wheel steering allows the four wheels to move independently of each other to give you added control. It doesn't necessarily improve your traction as all-wheel drive does, but it will still make your drive easier and safer.
