Acura, was founded on March 27, 1986. However, the concept dates back to 1981. Realizing that luxury vehicles appealed to a new and more niche audience, Acura was formed to make an entirely different type of luxury car. That decision proved to be worthwhile, as Acura is one of the most recognizable and respected luxury automakers in the world.

Acura Begins

The name "Acura" was first proposed for the luxury automaker in 1981. However, it wasn't until several years later that the company officially launched, following several secret meetings and closed-door discussions. On the day that it launched, Acura opened with 60 dealerships. By the end of its first production year, Acura sold nearly 160,000 vehicles, and it more than doubled the number of dealerships it had. The company also expanded its reach from Japan to locations worldwide, including the United States and Canada.

Acura's First Cars

Acura initially made a name for itself through two vehicles: the Acura Legend and the Acura Integra. The two cars were so popular that they catapulted Acura to fame in the luxury auto world virtually overnight. Both vehicles, and the company itself, inspired the creation of several additional luxury brands that are now also household names, including INFINITI and Lexus.

Acura continued to produce its successful first vehicles, and it introduced other cars to its lineup over time, too. In 1989, the automaker released yet another iconic vehicle called the NSX. The NSX was designed with performance in mind, and it proved to be just as fast and capable as any vehicle on the track. The NSX also offered style and luxury.

Acura Today

Today, Acura continues to produce top-quality vehicles. You can even find many popular Acura models on our dealership lots. The company has also expanded from producing luxury sedans and sports cars to creating SUVs too. Two of its most popular SUVs are the MDX and the RDX. Both offer a winning combination of performance, interior amenities, and advanced safety aids. Although Acura stands out for many reasons, top-notch safety is one of its key qualities.
