Specs at a Glance

The redesigned 2022 Acura MDX is among the top luxury SUVs on the market. A more comfortable interior and an improved driving experience make the new model especially appealing. Let's take a look at how the MDX Base compares to the MDX Type S.

Performance

Motivating the MDX Base is a robust V6 engine, which musters out a competitive 290 horsepower. A rapid-shifting. 10-speed automatic transmission helps promote maximum responsiveness. Meanwhile, the SUV's handling is enhanced by a double-wishbone front suspension. While front-wheel drive comes standard, Acura's advanced Super-Handling AWD system is optional. You'll be able to tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Stepping up to the MDX Type S allows you to experience another level of performance. Its turbo V6 engine pushes out an exciting 355 horsepower. Mated to the engine is a sports-tuned, 10-speed automatic transmission. Not only does the Type S model offer quicker acceleration, but it also features an adjustable air suspension for even more precise handling. Brembo front brake calipers bring enhanced stopping power. Acura adds its Super-Handling AWD system as standard equipment. When venturing off-road or traveling through deep snow, activating the Type S trim's Lift mode gives you extra ground clearance.

Appearance

Even the MDX Base makes a bold statement with its sleek bodywork. While Acura's signature Jewel Eye LED headlights are found in the front, Chicane LED taillights are used to illuminate the rear end. Meanwhile, stylish 19-inch alloy wheels give the SUV a commanding stance. Several head-turning exterior colors are available, including Liquid Carbon Metallic and Performance Rd Pearl.

Expect the MDX Type S to have an especially aggressive look. You'll immediately notice its sportier front fascia and unique 21-inch alloy wheels with red brake calipers. Quad exhaust tips add another racy touch. Unlike the base model, the MDX Type S offers an exclusive Tiger Eye Pearl color option.

Features

The MDX Base isn't your typical entry-level trim. It comes loaded with an impressive list of premium amenities. Heated front seats and a panoramic sunroof help create a relaxing atmosphere. Standard tech includes a 12.3-inch HD display with wireless smartphone integration, a Precision Cockpit digital dash, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Type S model features a flat-bottom steering wheel and perforated Milano leather sport seats and has an especially exciting feel. A 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D sound system and navigation also come standard.
